The Scalp

  • The scalp has 5 layers (SCALP)
    • Skin
    • Dense Connective tissue (fascia)
    • Epicranial Aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica)
      • Extends from the nuchal line to its merging with the occipitofrontalis
      • Continuous with several muscles of the face
    • Loose connective tissue – metabolic support
    • Pericranium
  • Injury to the scalp is important
    • Accumulation of fluid => Inflammation
    • No deep fascia in face means that laceration through aponeurosis causes gaping wounds
